Weekly Activities

(Kindly provided by the Woodland Trust)

19/07/08

A lot of writers and artists
get their ideas from nature.

Find a quiet place to sit and write a story (it could
be your favourite tree, garden or a bench with a view)

BIRD'S TALE

Write a story about a bird

Here are some ideas:

  • Bird’s home being chopped down
  • Bird’s summer holiday
  • Bird’s first day in the city
  • Baby bird’s first flight

You could take photos to put in your story.

How many different birds can you get into your story?

BIRD COMIC

Can you make your story as a cartoon?

If you don't want to draw, try finding some photos and pictures to cut out and stick on your comic strip - you could make a collage of different animals and places using lots of different pictures in the same cartoon box.

BIRD MAP

Draw a map for your story

Think about where your bird lives, where it flies and what it might be looking for.

You could draw your map like the ones in fantasy books (like Treasure Island or the Lord of the Rings)

BIRD IDIAL

Print it, cut it, fasten it, spin it!

Struggling to think of bird names? Don't know one bird from another?

Here's a brand new IDial with common garden and woodland birds:

BIRD BRAIN

We haven't got a bird quiz yet. How do you fancy making one?

Check out the other online quizzes for ideas...
then send us your ideas!

It could be your quiz that goes on the website!

BIRD'S EYE VIEW

What do you think a bird sees?

Pretend you're a bird.
A bird with a long strip of paper and some pencils :op

Can you draw a big long map strip showing what a bird would see on the ground as it was flying? (a bird's eye view)

  • Do you think it would follow a path, road or river?
  • What different habitats would it fly over?
  • Are there any other animals it might see?
  • What do things looks like from above?

Have a look at some online maps to see what things look like from above (turn on satellite view):
